What is erythema?

Im doing a project about it i need to know what it is and how is someone able to get it.

What is erythema?
Erythema is n large abnormal redness of the skin caused by capillary congestion. It is one of the cardinal signs of inflammation.

It can be caused by infection, massage, electrical treatments, acne medication, allergies, exercise or solar radiation (sunburn), any of which can cause the capillaries to dilate, resulting in redness. Erythema is a common side effect of radiotherapy treatment due to patient exposure to electromagnetic radiation.
Reply:Erythema is a histamine reaction in the skin to an outside irritant, like bacteria or an allergen. It causes the skin to become red and inflamed. Usually seen in a rash, or close to an abrasion that hasn't been properly cared for. Clears right up with an anti-histamine like claritin, benedryl, vistaril.
Reply:It is reddening of the skin and a common but nonspecific sign of skin irritation, injury, or inflammation. It is caused by dilation of superficial blood vessels in the skin. The causative agent is human parvovirus B-19. Transmission is thought to be via respiratory secretions from infected patients; however, maternal-fetal transmission can occur and hemolytic disease of the newborn may result. Some types- ab igne (localized due to heat exposure), annulare (red, ring-shaped rash), chronicum migrans (red rash with a sharply defined border and central clearing and usually appears within 3-32 days after a tick bite), induratum (chronic vasculitis of the skin in young women that leave atrophic scars), infectiosum (moderately contagious disease most commonly seen in school-age children), intertrigo (chafing), marginatum (center of the area fades leaving elevated edges), multiforme (rash usually caused by an immune response to drugs or to an infection), nodosum (red nodular rash on the shins that typically arises in conjunction with another illness), nodosum leprosum (red nodular vasculitic rash which may be a complication of the treatment for leprosy), punctate (occurs in minute points such as scarlet fever rash), toxic (redness resulting toxic agents such as drugs), toxicum neonatorum (benign, self-limited rash marked by firm, yellow-white papules or pustules from 1 to 2 mm in size), and venenatum (caused by contact with a toxic substance).

Cure for erythema multiforme?

It is generally thought to be an allergic reaction (hypersensitivity), and milder forms of the "rash" goes away pretty quickly. If you can treat the underlying cause of the reaction then you can control it. Medications, foods and other things may cause the reaction.

There can be extensive involvement, and some may be triggered by herpes virus. In these cases the treatment may be more diffcult. In cases caused by herpes an antiviral medication may help. In very serious cases skin grafts might even be called for.

Is erythema modusom contagious?and what causes it?

You mean:

Erythema Nodosum

What is erythema nodosum?

Erythema nodosum is characterized by tender, red bumps, usually found on the shins. Quite often, erythema nodosum is not a separate disease, but, rather, a sign of some other disease, or of a sensitivity to a drug.

Diseases that can cause erythema nodosum:

streptococcal infections

sarcoidosis (inflammation of the lymph nodes and other organs)

leprosy

coccidioidomycosis (infection of the upper respiratory tract and lungs)

histoplasmosis (an infectious pulmonary disease)

tuberculosis

psittacosis (a flu-like disease)

lymphogranuloma venereum (a venereal infection)

ulcerative colitis

Drugs that can cause erythema nodosum:

antibiotics containing sulfa

bromides

idodides

oral contraceptives

What are the symptoms of erythema nodosum?

The following are the most common symptoms of erythema nodosum. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently:

raised bruises on shins

fever

joint pain

enlarged lymph nodes in chest

Young adults are particularly susceptible to erythema nodosum -- the symptoms of which may resemble other dermatologic conditions. Consult a physician for diagnosis.

How is erythema nodosum diagnosed?

A biopsy (removal of tissue for examination under a microscope) of a bump can usually confirm the diagnosis. However, the exact cause can not always be identified. Drug-caused erythema nodosum can usually be diagnosed by careful elimination of the drug causing it.

Treatment for erythema nodosum:

Specific treatment for erythema nodosum will be determined by your physician based on the cause of the disorder and may include:

antibiotics

treatment of underlying cause

bed rest to relieve pain

aspirin

corticosteroids

Is erythema modusom contagious?and what causes it?
It isn't a disease, it is a symptom. You won't spread it, but if you have an infection that is causing it, it is possible, but there are so many things that cause it, you should see a doctor asap.

Describe erythema and state what would cause this to happen following a arm massage?
This condition is redness of the skin, usually occuring in patches, caused by irritation or injury to the tissue.

Was the person who performed the arm massage not as gentle as they should be ?

Did they twist the arm skin the wrong way (similar to a "chinese burn") ?

Erythema nodosum?

Does anyone know if there's a treatment for this? It seems to be recurring for 3 years but seven dermatologists have no idea what caused it, how to cure it, or even how to get rid of the unsightly bruises the condition leaves.

Erythema nodosum?
Erythema nodosum is initially managed by identifying and treating any underlying condition present. Simultaneously, treatment is directed toward the inflamed skin from the erythema nodosum.

Treatments for erythema nodosum include antiinflammatory drugs, and cortisone by mouth or injection. Colchicine is sometime used effectively to reduce inflammation. Treatment must be customized for the particular patient and conditions present. It is important to note that erythema nodosum, while annoying and often painful, does not threaten internal organs and the long-term outlook is generally very good.

The most effective treatment is to remove the cause. Sometimes no cause is found, and complete resolution takes four to six weeks. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID's-ibuprofen, Alleve and others) and bed rest may be used to reduce the pain and swelling. Injections may also be used for large and painful nodules. Oral potassium iodide works great but is unpleasant to take and must be dosed correctly. Other treatments are available in severe cases.
Reply:Treatment should focus on the underlying cause. Symptoms can be treated with bedrest, leg elevation, compressive bandages, wet dressings, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) (Wolff et al, 2005). NSAIDS are usually more effective at the onset of EN versus with chronic disease.

Potassium iodide can be used for persistent lesions whose cause remains unknown. Corticosteroids and colchicine can be used in severe refractory cases (Wallace, 1967; Yurdakul et al, 2001; Mat et al, 2005)

Erythema Nodosum????

My niece has been having these bumps for at least 1 1/2 months now and has been to the dermo 2 times so far. The second time was since they didn't go away and she was even getting new ones. They want to do a biopsy now and she doesn't want that but I have been researching and told my sis it might me absolutely necessary. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about these bumps (she has them on her arm too and in the beginning I know she had canker sores in her mouth as well). I am getting nervous about the other diseases that associate with that sometimes. What do you think should happen next (tests)? Is that the right kind of doctor to continue this?

Erythema Nodosum????
Erythema nodosum is a specific form of panniculitis characterized by tender, red or violet, palpable subcutaneous nodules on the shins and occasionally other locations. It often occurs with an underlying systemic disease, notably streptococcal infections, sarcoidosis, and TB.

Please see the web pages for more details on Erythema nodosum.
Reply:Please tell her to go to a doctor that specializes in the blood. She needs to go A.S.A.P. My son had the same thing and they sent him to Barnes Jewish Hospital, in St. Louis Mo. They ran several test to see what the underlying condition was. They thought he had Rheumatoid Arthritis. Turned out that he just needed antibiotic, and then it cleared up. No underlying disease. Thank God. This is nothing to mess with. The dermatologist is not certified to treat this type of problem. He/she needs a specialist. Tell her to get referred to a disease doctor.

Erythema nodosum?

Erythema nodosum A tender, red, nodular rash on the shins that typically arises in conjunction with another illness, such as a streptococcal, fungal, or tubercular infection; inflammatory bowel disease; occult cancer; or sarcoidosis. Biopsies of the rash reveal inflammation of subcutaneous fat (panniculitis). Because the disease is often associated with other serious illnesses, a diagnostic search for an underlying cause usually is undertaken. In some patients, no cause is identified.

TREATMENT: Therapy is directed at the cause, when it is known. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs provide symptomatic relief for many patients.
